what ion must be responsible for the observed pH of FeCl3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fe because hcl is a strong acid so Cl- is not a conjugate base and Fe is a conjugate acid slightly lowering the pH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For the aq layer, Fe(OH)3. A product of H2O and the excess FeCl3. For the Persian blue layer, KCl + Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3. Product of potassium ferrocyanide + ferric chloride. For the acidic layer (white), FeCl3. For the basic layer (pink), NaOH. The phenolphthalene is a pH indicator. Since it turned pink, then it's basic.
