A slit 1.00 mm wide is illuminated by light of wave-length 589 nm. We see a diffraction pattern on a screen 3.00 m away. What is the distance between the first two diffraction minima on the same side of the central diffraction maxi-mum? (Answer: 1.77 mm)

Did you attempt to use the formula? This seems quite straightforward.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know what formula to use.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did your teacher derive the formula \(\lambda = \frac{ax}{D}\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't have a teacher. I'm self-teaching myself right now. But if that's the right formula, then are we solving for D? What are a and x? I know the other one must be the wavelength.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Never mind. Now I get it. Thanks for the help.

lol you're welcome :) though you might want to look up on the limitations of that formula.
