Ammonia is _____. an acid a base a neutral

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a base. Its pH level is greater than 7. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14. 7 is right in the middle. It's "neutral." Anything LESS than 7 is ACIDIC. Anything GREATER than 7 is BASIC.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

molecules don't have pH's ammonia is a base due to it's ability to "pick up" a proton (H+), rather than give one off (which is a characteristic of an acid). By picking up a a proton, it decreases the free concentration of H+and makes a solution more basic
