Hmmm ions are elementals that have given away a electron or gained a electron so they have noble gas structure... When you gain or lose a electron then what happens? Answer that and you have your answer.

OpenStudy (frostbite):

Ions are characterized by having a positive or negative charge, becuase they either have gained or lost electrons. So fx if Na give away the 1 electron it is outer shell it get to look like the noble gas Ne and therefor get a positive charge becuase there are more protons than electrons so to say.
