Help with standard form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would you convert y - (-2) = 4/3(x - 0) to standard form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One moment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the first thing you must do is put the equation in y=mx+b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Once you do that I'll continue explaining

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you get y=4/3x+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now standard form is Ax+By=C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. So you had been simplifying the equation I wrote?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry computer crashed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now you need to find the A, B, and C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You take t right from the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So your A is the number before x (4/3), your B is the number before y (1), and your Cis the remaining number (2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you get the equation: 4/3x+y=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry it took so long I had to use a different computer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that make sense? Any questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you. Could you help me with one more thing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you turn that equation into a slope intercept form equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The one that's in standard form now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So from 4/3x+y=2 into standard.... is that what you're asking?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If so, this is what you do:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You pretty much just go backwards

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you first put it into y=mx+b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you get =4/3x+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you hold on maybe thirty minutes? I gotta go to piano.... I promise I'll answer your question when I get home

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm back so sorry for the wait

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK so you have y=4/3x+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 4/3x from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The slope is a fraction so you have to multiply both sides by the denominatior

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so multiply each by three

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now you have 3y=-4x+6 (finished)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So next you add 4x to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and you're final answer is 4x+3y=6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And for the question before this one I forgot to let you know that in standard form you can't have a fraction, so you simply multiply both sides by the denominator and you'd end up with 4x+3y=6... (4/3x times 3 is 4, 2 times 3 is 6, and of course y times 3 is 3y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have any questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But you said that 4x + 3y = 6 was intercept slope form right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, standard.... slope-intercept is y=4/3x+2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No prob! Any more questions or are you good?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Kind of, it's just that for the questions I asked you, I have to show my work, and I'm trying how to write that out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let me type it out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-(-2)=4/3(x-0) y+2=4/3(x-0) (0,2) 2=4/3(0)+b 2=0+b 2=b y=4/3x+2 A=4/3 B=1 C=2 4/3x+y=2 (multiply each side by 3) 4x+3y=6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much for all your help! If I could give you more than one medal I would. Does this look about right?
