Why is the answer to Be +O2 -> _____, 2Be+ O2 -> 2BeO instead of BeO2

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Be oxidizes to a 2+ charge, oxygen is 2-, and their charges have to balance out. If it was BeO2, there would be a 2- charge on the molecule.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! Gah. haha. I always forget about the charges. ^.^ *Blonde* Thanks once again. haha.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

haha no problem. well all have *blonde* days, trust me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha. I feel like I have more than others at time. xD It makes me feel like a goof. haha. Oh wells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

O2 is obviously a gas. . . Be solid? and BeO2 is. . . uhmmm. . .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I want to say gas but I don't trust my guess. haha.
