Why zinc and lead are produced

Both have significant use in batteries (zinc in Leclanche cells, e.g. AA batteries, and lead in 6 and 12V rechargeable batteries for cars, motorcycles, watercraft and boats). Zinc is also an economical rustproofing coating for steel. There are many other uses of both metals.
