how do u draw a formula unit of carbon dioxide

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do u calculate formula mass of the molecule ( carbon dioxide)

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

carbon dioxide , is composed of the elements Carbon, and Oxygen di- means two so what do you think the formula for carbon dioxide is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

co2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i calculate the formula mass

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

thats right but make sure you Capitalize the first letter of the element [so it dosent get mixed up with Co which is cobalt ]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

if you look at a periodic table , it should have the atomic mass of Carbon , and the atomic mass of Oxygen,

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

the mass of a molecule is the sum of the atomic masses , multiplied by the number of time they occur in the molecule

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

di you find the atomic mass of Carbon?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

hopefully you found the atomic mass of Carbon is about 12 grams/atom and the atomic mass of Oxygen is about 16 grams/atom CO_2 has one carbon and two oxygens so the mass of one molecule of CO_2 is 12 g/atom + 2 × 16 / atom which is equal to about 44 grams/ molecule
