How does adding salt affect the freezing point of water?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

salted water has a lower freezing point compared to pure water (compare 0°C and 0°F). The reason is that ice formation involves geometrical organization of water molecules to form a crystal which is more difficult with Na+ and Cl- ions in the solution. This is because when ion dissolve they attract water molecules around themselves.
