please let me know if i'm correct :) i chose B Find the lateral area of the square pyramid shown, to the nearest whole number. A. 7294 yd2 B. 3192 yd2 C. 4758 yd2 D. 3647 yd2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

B is incorrect, how did you get B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perimeter*base/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perimeter*height i mean , sorry

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's if you're dealing with a prism, not a pyramid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay , so then what formula is correct for this problem?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you draw in the slant height, you get what you see in blue

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

call that slant height s so s = slant height you can find the slant height if you look at the pyramid like this |dw:1355620862392:dw| this is what you would see if you look at the pyramid directly at once face (and not at the corner)...basically, you can only see one face

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

by the pythagorean theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2 21^2 + 38^2 = s^2 441 + 1444 = s^2 s^2 = 441 + 1444 s^2 = 1885 s = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused on how to get the s now would i divide?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you take the square root to undo the square

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

s = sqrt(1885) s = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

43.41?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so each triangular face looks like this |dw:1355621429131:dw|
