predicting products of chemical reactions: i need explanation...magnesium bromide+chlorine

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

MgBr2 + Cl2 SingleDisplacement! MgCl2 + Br2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first how would u write this as a balanced equation? wouldnt it be mgbr2+cl ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how is it cl2?

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

So, MgBr2 + Cl2 => MgCl2 + Br2

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Chlorine on its own is diatomic :) There are a few elements that are diatomic like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh is bromine one of them?

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Actually there are 7. Yep bromine is one too :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then do i need to balance the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since mgbr2 is neutral and cl2 has charge of -2?

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Technically, yes. But look at the equation, we're lucky. It turned out balanced

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Each Cl has a charge of -1

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

but theres two of them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh do you balance the equation after you write out the reaction

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

yepp

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you!!

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

Np:)

OpenStudy (pottersheep):

good luck
