Factor fully:

\[\huge x^3+2x^2-18x-40\]

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

are you sure you're not missing anything?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i am sure

OpenStudy (jennychan12):

x^2(x+2)-2(9x+20) (x^2-2)(x-2)(9x+20) you could do that...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is a mistake somewhere... the answer needs to be\[\huge \color{green}{(x+4)}\color{red}{(x^2-2x-\color{blue}{10})}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am looking

hartnn (hartnn):

\(x^3+2x^2-18x-40 \\ x^3+4x^2-2x^2 -10x-8x-40 \\(x^3-2x^2-10x)+(4x^2-8x-40) \\ ...\)

hartnn (hartnn):

because what u did after \(\color{green}{x}\color{red}{(}x^2+2x\color{blue}{-2 \color{red}{)+\color{green}{4}(}-4x}-10\color{red}{)}\) you cannot factor out x+4 ... a(c)+b(d) does not equal (a+b)(c+d)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I know. You cannot factor out the (x+4) from mine because the other quantities ar not the same
