If we bring the 12 to the front we get a sum of 1/4^i. Our first term, a = 1/4 and our common ratio is 1/4 since each consecutive term is 1/4th of the previous. Using our equation we can get the summation as S = a / (1 - r) = 1/4 / (1 - 1/4) Then we multiply this by the 12 we brought out earlier. Our final solution is 12 * 1/4 / (1 - 1/4) What do you get?

for sum of infinite GP S=a/(1-r) here a=3 and r=1/4 hence S=12/(1-1/4) =4
