write the structural formula of any isomer of normal heptane. plssss help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plsss tell the ans someone

OpenStudy (frostbite):

structural isomers too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thnx

OpenStudy (matt101):

That's a structural isomer for octane: 4-methylheptane. Yes, it says heptane in the name, but that's only because heptane is the parent chain. It is an alkane with 8 carbon atoms, so it is a structural isomer of octane, not heptane. You're looking for a compound with the molecular formula C7H16. Take off any terminal carbon from your drawing and you have a structural isomer of heptane.

OpenStudy (frostbite):

yea ups just noticed... 1 carbon to much

OpenStudy (frostbite):

ment to draw 3-methylhexane.

OpenStudy (matt101):

Sounds good! Glad to help :)

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Well, heptane has 7 carbons. I forgot the formula for determining hydrogens, I think it's 2n+2 or something like that, but Just rearrange them around in different orientations.
