OpenStudy (tyteen4a03):

Why is it possible for pH value to be negative while it is not possible for pH value to go beyond 14?

OpenStudy (andrefontex):

i knew this...

OpenStudy (andrefontex):

pH = -log[H+] if u get concentrations above 1, u get negative pH's. water dissociation constant = 10^-14 Constant=Kw=[OH-] x [H+] = 14 pKw = pH + pOH

OpenStudy (andrefontex):

if pOH is 0, the max pH is 14. so it never passes 14. but it is just because the water dissociation constant was pre - established to be 10^-14
