What reaction would take place if hot tugsten was surrounded by air?
instead of argon in a lightbulb i mean.
it will from oxide on the metal at that current level
and will not emit the light
yaaaa tungsten is metal
so normal bulbs of tungsten doesnt hv air inside? if so they wont work?
Argon is a noble gas, which means it is inert (unreactive). Air however contains around 20% oxygen. If the bulb is filled with air, the atmospheric oxygen will oxidise the filament. this then cause it to not shine so brightly/not shine. The oxygen can also cause the filament to burn, making the bulb dangerous. Therefore, Argon provides an inert atmosphere to prevent the above from happening
so, on the bulbs, they all have argon?
yaaaa or helium may be present in some cases but the what we call tube light usually consist of Ar because its cheap
they insert argon in the bulb? why not only N2.. wouldnt be cheaper?
the Filament is tungstem and the atmosphere is argon. mostly
how do they rich the atmosfere with argon?
argon is innetr because its a noble gas but can u explain and give the name of the treaction that would occur.
the atmosphere in the bulb is riced with argon when its made but thats not relivent.
could a bulb have no gas inside?
i dont think so. not sure.
i thought the electrons excited were the ones on the metal
yaaa but vacuum will be there these were manufactured in olden days now days you get with noble gases filled bulb
can u explain and give the name of the treaction that would occur.
reaction*
can u explain and give the name of the reaction that would occur.
its not a chemical reaction just excitation of electron and relese of photon energy by tungsten filament when you apply sufficient voltage
this is the exact quiestion in my revision booklet:
hes asking if it had air with oxygen
W will be equal as Cr .. so its a redox reaction
when electricity is pased through the tungsten filliment it gets very hot and gives out light. what reaction would occur if the hot tungsten was surtrounded by air instead of argon?
ok ok fine it will be oxidation of filament that is tungsten reacting with oxygen to tungsten oxide
ty
W+O2 = WO3 just balance the equatin thats all
you asked another question why not nitrogen the nitrogen may be more reactive comparatively then the inert gases this because it contains triple bond where two pie bonds are present they may absorb the photon light for excitation and intensity of light may decrease
i have a new question: H2O2. write down everything thatthe formulae tels you about each molicule of the hydrogen peroxide. i am only puting the question here because i dont know how to post a new question.
where as the inert gases do not have any bonds they are monoatomic
first time i use openstudy... its awesome.. iam from Portugal btw
yeah it is isnt it inm from uk
but ur saying N2 reacts with light?!
no it absorbs the llight photons but i dont understand the thing about bonds
ok let it be its less suitable than the inert that sall
i have a new question: H2O2. write down everything thatthe formulae tels you about each molicule of the hydrogen peroxide. i am only puting the question here because i dont know how to post a new question.
u mean its less inert as noble gases , right?
?
yeah
yeahaaa
h2o2 hydrogen peroxyde
gets in H20 and frees 02
yeh but does it mean the way its bonded
its and hydrogen bond
H2O2 is good oxidising agent mean it liberates nascent oxygen{O} and not the Oxygen molecule {O2} . the nascent oxygen is more reactive than the O2 thats why its used in oxidation process
no the question says write down everything that the formlee tels u about each molecule of hydrogen peroxide
