Determine the values of a and b for which the following function is continuous at every real number x f(x) { ax+b if x ≤ 1 -2bx^2 - 8a if 1 < x < 2 4b^2/a -5x if x ≥ 2 }

OpenStudy (aravindg):

ok what you need to do is that for each junction points evalute LH limit and RH limits and equate them for continuity. You will get 2 equation in a and b , solve for a and b :)

OpenStudy (aravindg):

got it @alyannahere ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

explain further please @AravindG :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like will it be ax+b x->1^+ x->1^- ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then it would still be a+b @AravindG

OpenStudy (aravindg):

no it would be the second equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm so sorry but could you please show me how to do it? i can't seem to understand @AravindG

OpenStudy (aravindg):

ok lets take an example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it a=0,-10 b=0 @AravindG then if i got the a&b.. what next?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

can you show your working?
