In acid-alkaline titration, why we cannot use litmus to detect the end point? the book said the color change in end point is not sharp, however, when the pH of the solution drop from 7 to lower, the color will change from purple to red.(1) When we use methyl orange to detect the end point, the color will change from orange to red.(2) the color change is both similar, why we cannot just use litmus instead?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

litmus paper is used to detect just acidity or basiscity it vannot find the end point accurately thats why we dont use litmus paper wheather you solution is PH9 or Ph11 litmus papers shows blue color only thats why its not suitable to do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is indeed a litmus solution indicator, however, the science book recommend not to use it because "it don't have a sharp color change in end point", i don't know why changing from purple/blue to red can be define as "not sharp enough"

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

still error will be more thats why they dont recommend
