[(a)^(1/n)]^(1/m) // ok, so just multiply the exponents a^((1/n)*(1/m)) // multiply a^(1/(mn)) // revert back so sqrt form. \[\sqrt[mn]{a}\]

do you mean using the equation editor. or are you talking about changing into exponent form. you have to use the exponent form for this problem. (as far as I can tell)
