How is the number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom calculated?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

subtract the atomic number (number of protons) from the atomic mass (neutrons and protons).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You cannot calculate the number of neutrons if you don't have the mass number (A) of the atom. You can have several variations (isotopes) of the same atom. For example H can have 0, 1 or 2 neutrons.
