What is the radii trend across divalent transition metal ions due to?

i'm reasoning that the decrease in radius is due to effective nuclear charge then d5 has all singly occupied d orbitals, but i'm not sure how this applies to the radii.
i see that the addition of an electron from d1 to d2 does not affect the radius much but then why does the addition of another (d3) decrease the radius more than the previous?
