whats the charge of an oxide atom?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

There is no such thing as an oxide ATOM. The ending "ide" implies that this object has some kind of negative charge, but the word atom implies a neutral charge. A more proper question would be: what is the charge of an oxide ION? In that case, what you really have to know is: what will an oxygen atom do in order to fill its energy levels and become stable? How many valence electrons does an oxygen atom have, and how many does it need to fill its valence shell?

An oxide ion has a charge of (-2).

OpenStudy (jfraser):

^completely defeats the purpose, thanks

If you mean oxide ion, the charge is 2-. So, JFraser and Envii are correct (:
