Solve the indefinite integral 10/[(x-1)((x^2)+9)]

The hint says to set up the partial fractions as A/(x-1) + (Bx+C)/(x^2+9) but I don't know why I can make the last term Bx + C

for partial fractions, the degree of numerator is always 1 less than degree of denominator. so when we had linear equation, like 1/x+a or 1/x we used constants like A,B,C... for quadratic expressions, numerator = linear, like Ax+B,Cx+D, ... got this ?
