For three points to lie on a straight line the shortest distance between the three points must equal the longest distance between the points. Can someone please explain this to me in detail please?

I'm not quite sure if you understand. It seems to be saying this although I'm not 100% sure.
What you did makes sense. It makes some intuitive sense to me. i.e. for it to even be possible that they are on the same line the distances between the a to b and b to c must add to the distance between a to c, but I am unsure of how it proves they are on the same line.
Ahh, I'm trying to think of an explanation but...
Well I guess in a way it makes sense from a to b and b to c is a to c.
If it's not a straight line then it wouldn't equal!
