Juliana lives and works in Pennsylvania, which has a flat state income tax of 3.07%. If her annual salary is $41,995 and she gets paid once a month, how much is withheld from her gross income for state income tax each pay period?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Her monthly income is 41995/12 ~ 3500. Then 3.07% is remove for tax. 0.0307 * 3500 ~ $107 each month

i got 1.004205607047

@chinagurl Does that answer you got seem at all reasonable? 3.07% means $3.07 out of every $100 she is paid is withheld. If she's making $42k, that's 420 times $100, so about 420*3 = $1260 (roughly) is taken out over the course of a year. 1/12 of that is $105.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I didn't do the math exactly, I'm just trying to illustrate a ballpark estimate...

I knew it wasn't reasonable lol I was sort of lost at my answer but thanks I rounded it off to $107!

Glad to hear that you recognized the answer didn't make sense. That's an important skill!
