Which of the following is a common property or characteristic of an acid?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Slippery feel Bitter taste Increases the hydroxide ion concentration in solution Reacts with active metals to produce hydrogen gas

OpenStudy (aaronq):

can you eliminate any from this list?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slippery feel and bitter taste i think.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yep, those are base properties.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

now, does introducing an acid into a solution increase the number of hydroxide ions? OH-?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to be honest i have no idea.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

okay. acids increase the number of hydronium H3O+ ions in solution (some teachers like to just write H+ although thats incorrect since that won't exist in reality) and by increasing that concentration they lower the pH ( pH is just a logarithmic measure of hydronium ion concentration).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

bases increase the hydroxide concentration. also a metal and an acid react in this way: metal + acid -> salt + hydrogen gas

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou so much!!!! also would you happen to know What is true of a strong acid? It ionizes close to 100 percent in water. It is a weak electrolyte. It does not conduct electricity in solution. It always has a high concentration.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

the characteristic of a strong base or acid is that they dissociate completely (and contribute the H3O+ or OH- from every molecule introduced) while weak acids and bases only dissociate a bit.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry but what would that make it

OpenStudy (aaronq):

It always has a high concentration. - not true for anything It does not conduct electricity in solution. - ions conduct electricity, are H3O+ or OH- ions? It is a weak electrolyte. - false, read above It ionizes close to 100 percent in water. - are H3O+ and OH- ions?
