A chef has 10 spice jars, but his new spice rack only holds 8 spice jars. How many ways can he arrange 8 jars on the spice rack?

A. 45 B. 80 C. 1,814,400 D. 3,628,800

The answer is C, 1814400. If there are 10 total, but only 8 can fit, we simply do something called a factorial, represented by a ! (for example, 10! is 10x9x8.. so forth.. x2x1.) However, since only 8 can fit, we only multiply down 8 digits, or 10x9x8...x3.

B

No. of arrangements of 8 jars = 8! No. of ways of selecting 8 jars out of 10 = C(10,8) So final answer = C(10,8) * 8! or simply P(10,8)
