The process of solution formation of NaOH in water is extremely exothermic. What special precautions should I take in mixing this solution> Write down a sequence of steps I should Follow to make 5.0 M solution of NaOH ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If a process is extremely exothermic (releases alot of energy) in what form might you expect to see that energy released?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im not sure really. but I do know that the energy is realeased due to heat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

very close when energy is stored in chemical bonds it is potential energy correct? when those bonds are broken where does that energy go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(of course assuming the reaction is exothermic)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is the energy released due to heat or is the energy released as heat?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

you should ensure that you add NaOH drop by drop to water i suppose

OpenStudy (preetha):

Pellets of NaOH should be added to the water, in small quantities and with constant stirring to dissipate the heat. Not the other way round. Addition of water to the total amount of NaOH will result in a lot of heat which will cause the water to boil up or become steam which will be dangerous.
