Can someone PLEASE help draw the Lewis structure for each of the molecules NH3 and help answer 1.What is the central atom? 2.How many atoms are bonded to the central atom? 3.How many lone pairs of electrons are on the central atom? 4.How many single bonds are there in this molecule? 5.How many multiple bonds (double and/or triple) are there in this molecule?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Well, hydrogen has 1 electron in its valence shell. So it's able to bond with another lone pair. Start with that. Nitrogen has 5. That means that it has two lone pairs and 3 single electrons which are able to "bond"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So hydrogen is the central atom and there are no double or triple bonds? How would you draw it?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

No, nitrogen is the central atom. Try drawing it first. Start by drawing lewis dots around nitrogen. Then draw 3 hydrogens around the nitrogen. When you have N• •H it means you have a single bond. which is usually shown as a line - N-H or N•-•H

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1362712124148:dw| right?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Yes. correct. However, you have TWO electrons that are unpaired which you also need to draw.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would they go on each side of the C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean N

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Not on the side, but on top.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

They go on top to show that they are unbonded and are a lone pair.

THank you :) so if i have CH4 i would get the model |dw:1362713415488:dw| what else would I have to add and how would I answer the questions
