What is displacement reaction ?
Displacement is a type of oxidation-reduction chemical reaction when an element or ion moves out of one compound and into another for ex:Cu + 2AgNO3 → 2Ag + Cu(NO3)2
A displacement reaction is where a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from a compound. In other words a metal higher up in the reactivity series will 'push out' a metal lower in the series. Example: Iron + Copper Sulphate ---> Iron Sulphate + Copper. The reason why this happened is because Iron is higher in the reactivity series so it 'takes' the sulphate from the copper to form iron sulphate... and copper. Basically, the rule is: If the pure metal is higher in the reactivity series than the metal in the compound then displacement will happen To revise I normally use flashcards, I memorize the information on the cards for 5 mins then I turn them over and try to remember everything. After a while I will memorize all the information. Although some people can just look at information and memorize it while others have to do exercises to remember. Try different techniques and see which works for you.
