the type of radiation that is the same as helium nucleus and can be blocked by a sheet of paper is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Answer: Alpha radiation: When a radioactive isotope decays to release a helium nucleus (4He2). Alpha radiation is a weak type of radiation, so anything such as paper, can prevent alpha particles from emitting out. Rutherford used alpha particles in his Gold Foil Experiment to test whether or not particles would pass through a thin sheet of gold foil. Turns out that the majority of the particles went straight through, while a few particles bounced back (deflected). This led him to comprise the theory that the atom was primarily "empty space." Our textbook illustrates that if you were to place a small corn kernel in the center of the superdome, then the corn kernel would represent the nucleus and the superdome surrounding the corn kernel would represent the empty space outside the nucleus. Remember radioactivity is the process in which matter and ion energy is released from the nucleus. Since radioactivity (or nuclear reactions) involve the change in the nucleus (the # of protons and neutrons), then the reaction ends up producing a NEW element. Important note: A nuclear reaction CHANGES the IDENTITY of an atom, and a lot of ENERGY is required/needed to do this (since your changing the atomic structure). This is unlike chemical reactions, where you only change the # of electrons. Other types of radiation include: Beta: involves fast moving NEGATIVELY charged ELECTRONS leaving nucleus. Gama: involves only energy is leaving nucleus. NO MATTER IS CHANGED! Positron: involves POSITIVELY charged ELECTRONS leaving nucleus. Hope this helps :) -Sara
