Why does sulfur not follow the octet rule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sulfur only has 6 valence electrons so it can't have an octet..

OpenStudy (aaronq):

i think she's getting at why can it have more than 8 valence electrons .. which is due to the ability of sulfur (as well as phosphorus) to "tap" into the 3d orbitals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know haha

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

Because it is in the third row of the periodic table. The strict octet rule holds only for elements in the 2nd row.
