name the different types of bonds holding atoms together

OpenStudy (anonymous):

metallic covalent, ionic and van der waals

thanks!

Let me know if you need detail on them, should be able to Google them. Covalent is sharing (H2O). Ionic is stealing NaCl Van der waals are weak interactions between molecules actually ignore that one my bad... Metallic is obviously for metals, which have free electrons :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what distinguishes ionic bonds from the others?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ionic bonds occur when an electron from an atom is completely remove and now "orbits" the other atom. Remember they are always just trying to balance out the charge of the nucleus of what ever atom it is. The protons have a +1 charge, so hydrogen to be stable needs 1 electron which has a -1 charge. With this said atoms also like to have complete shells, the first shell can hold 2 electrons, so hydrogen bonds will it's self H2 and each one shares it's 1 electron with the other. This sharing is covalent bonding.

The best example for ionic is salt, NaCl. I really good website for this is www.chemguide.com I use to use it whilst studying chemistry and atomic physics.
