Can anyone explain me Van der Waals equation? Why pressure is added and volume subtracted?

I think pressure is added.. meaning the actual pressure is MORE than the idea pressure cause of the force of attraction between the molecules and the walls of the container.. because of that .. the force with which they hit the walls would be a lil higher, than in ideal case why volume small? cause of the intermolecular forces.. since in reality molecules will attract each other, they would be closer and hence occupy LESSER volume THAN the assumed ideal case
