The difference between a control group and an experimental group is one group is exposed to the conditions of the experiment and the other is not. An experimental group is the group in a scientific experiment where the experimental procedure is performed. This group is exposed to the independent variable being tested and the changes observed and recorded. A control group is a group separated from the rest of the experiment where the independent variable being tested cannot influence the results. This isolates the independent variable's effects on the experiment and can help rule out alternate explanations of the experimental results.

OK, but this is not really an experiment. An experiment tests some idea. For example. at step 7 they say Add a bit of crystallized sodium acetate to your aqueous solution. Use the powder scrapings you removed from the pot while you were boiling down the solution. Start with a small pinch or two; if they have no effect, add a larger amount. An experimenter might want to test the idea of "how much" of a bit should be added. If you did this (and it looks like a lot of work), you would say the independent variable is "how much is added" (you would weight it) the dependent variable could be "it had an effect with 5 minutes" the control would be a solution with nothing added-- how long (if ever) before you see an effect ? the experiment (lots of them if you want to) would be to add a measured amount to a new solution and see if and when there is an effect. if you did that for 5 different solutions, with each one having slightly more sodium acetate added, you could get numbers on how quickly you see an effect, based on how much you added. That would be an experiment.

You seem to be missing the idea.... making this stuff is not an experiment. It is a "project". If you make it, there are no controls, no dependent and no independent variables. This may be ok, if the assignment is make hot ice. But if you have to do an experiment, you need to test some idea. A real experiment is harder to do than just make hot ice.

Here would be an experiment: make hot ice using vinegar try making hot ice using lemon juice. Does it still work? now you are testing if you can replace one acid with another.

You should think about that: what would you change ? (that is the independent variable) the dependent variable is: you create hot ice (or not) the control experiment is with vinegar the experimental group is with the lemon juice.

you might not get hot ice. So hot ice is the dependent variable: how much if any is formed if you switch from vinegar to lemon juice.
