Which of the following molecules is polar? (Nonbonding electrons have been omitted.) A. CH4 B) CH3Cl C) CCl4 D) CBr

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please help me :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is CH3Cl symmetrical in its molecular geometry?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

If it's asymmetric it's polar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly, abb0t.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the correct answer is B ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem :)

OpenStudy (abb0t):

I would argue that CBr is also polar. It's linear and there is a significant difference in electronegativity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then which of them is most polar?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

methyl bromide is the "more" polar. But arguable, CBr is also polar.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So B is the correct answer? @abb0t
