Balance the following equations. Classify them and indicate in each case if and which element oxidizes or reduces: a. Sn + Cl2 ----> SnCl4 I balanced the equation but what i'm having trouble with is figuring out which one oxidizes and which one reduces??

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

Sn is oxidized and Cl got reduced !!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you but how did you determine that?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

The oxidation state of Tin in left and right of the reaction can you tell

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

hey @pariisz24 say something LOL:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

still a bit confused oxidation is the loss of an electron n reduction is the gaining of an electron right?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaaa ur right on left side Sn oxidation state is 0 and when it loses 4 electrons its oxidation no changes to +4 and Cl2 on the left is having ) oxidation state while on the right it s oxidation state is -1 and it has gained one electron and hence it is reduced in the reaction
