I just watched a video and followed instructions on a lab write up that involved the mixing of zinc chloride and zinc metal, now its asking me to name 3 reasons why i could never have done this in a home lab. I have nooo idea why, anyone?!?!
can i see that video ???
its a couple of little ones. .. here are the written instructiona
Begin by determining the mass of a clean, dry 100 mL beaker. Click here for a photograph of initial mass of beaker. Record this mass in your data table. Find the mass of the zinc metal. Click here for a photograph of original zinc metal. Record the mass in your data table. (The mass of the weighing/tare boat has been accounted for, so the mass you see is the mass of the zinc only.) Place the zinc metal in the beaker. Using a graduated cylinder, measure out 30 mL of 3M HCl. Add the 30 mL of hydrochloric acid to the zinc in the beaker. Click here for a video clip of this process. Heat the beaker gently (using the hotplate) to speed the reaction, but do not allow the contents of the beaker to boil. If necessary, you can use the coated tongs to lift the beaker off the surface of the hotplate momentarily if the solution begins to boil. You will need to be vigilant while performing this step to ensure safety. Continue gentle heating until the reaction is complete. Click here for a video clip of this process. Once the reaction reaches completion, the zinc metal should be gone. Continue heating the liquid contents of the beaker to evaporate any remaining liquid. Do not heat the liquid aggressively as splattering may occur which will reduce the accuracy of your data, as well as cause potential injury to yourself or others. The liquid will begin to boil, thicken, and finally, a solid will appear. When all remaining liquid has evaporated, zinc chloride, the solid, will remain. Once this solid begins to melt, stop heating and allow the beaker to cool for five (5) minutes.
bcoz H2 is liberated in this process which catches fire and is dangerous to do in home!!
ans its exothermic and hilly reactive reaction!!!
thought so! its asking for 3 reasons tho. . .
maybe lack of proper lab gear?
yaaa that may be right !!!
and also Ur using Acid HCl !!which is not good to be used in home lab!!
thanks!!
ur welcome
