Find the vertices and foci of the hyperbola with equation

\[a^2=36, b^2=64\] \[c^2=b^2-a^2\]

focal F(c,0)

OpenStudy (mertsj):

The center is (-5,-1) For a hyperbola, a^2+b^2=c^2, so c = 10 for this hyperbola. That is important because the focal points are c units to the right and c units to the left of the center. Also a^2=36 so a = 6. This is important because the vertices are a units to the right and a units to the left of the center.
