Hi there ! Welcome to Openstudy ! :)

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Do you mean \(sp^2\) not \(p^2\). For instance, think of carbon, Now, in \(sp^3\) hybridization, this theory is used to explain how carbon can make 4 bonds with smaller or like-sized atoms such as: H, S, P, O. You're basically taking the 3 p-orbitals from carbon (Remember carbon has 3 p-orbitals: \(P_x, P_y, P_z\) with 4 electrons in it's valence shell) and overlapping them with the s-orbital from hrdrogen to make the hybridized orbital. This results in single bonds. In \(sp^2\) orbitals, same concept, but you are only taking TWO of the three p-orbitals to make the new hybridized orbital. And as you might suspect, this results in double bond.
