Well, to get rid of the squared, you have to take the square root on both sides.

making the x's x^2 and taking the radical sign out from each equation, right?

Well, square rooting the left side would remove the exponent of 2 from the (x-4) and squaring rooting the right side would make the 2 into \[\sqrt{2}\]
