how many valence does nitrogen have

OpenStudy (abb0t):

You can refer to your periodic table for that. If the P-orbital can fix a maximum of 6 electrons, and you have 2 already from the s-orbital, and carbon has 4 (2 from s and 2 from P). Then how much do you think Nitrogen has?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you have to add them up

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

thomaster (thomaster):

Nitrogen = [He] 2s^2 2p^3 2+3=5 Valence electrons = 5

OpenStudy (abb0t):

No. It might also be easier if you just looked at the group number and subtracted 10 from it. Which would be 5. If you notice, it's group 15 - 10 = 5

thomaster (thomaster):

well i learned it that way :P you could also just count in the row where the element is from left to right. So lithium=1, beryllium=2, boron=3, carbon=4 and nitrogen=5

thx u
