Quick question that looks complicated, but isn't :) Which of the following statement(s) about -propanol, CH3CH2CH2OH, and ethanethiol, CH3CH2SH are true? I know that propanol is more soluble since it Hydrogen Bonds, so that leaves me with two options, both can be true or only one. I know one is true for sure, but I don't know if this one is true: 1-Propanol is more soluble in water because it has a greater molecular mass than ethanethiol. Propanol does have a greater molecular mass, but does that really have anything to do with solubility?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

Propanol does have a greater molecular mass, but does that really have anything to do with solubility

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

its TRUE statement

OpenStudy (vane11):

But I thought it was the Dispersion that mattered when looking at factors other than bond strength, so that would mean number of electrons, not mass....?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

the number of carbons also affects solubility.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

in water.

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

its not correct to say the solubility on the basis of molar mass

OpenStudy (abb0t):

another factor: polarity

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaaa POLARITY is the important factor to measure the Solubility!!! Polar compound dissolves POLAR solvent similarly for non polar solvents

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yesterday only we have discussed it right :) still not understood the concept :)

OpenStudy (vane11):

well the other answer was that propanol was more soluble because the O is more electronegative than S in ethanethiol

OpenStudy (vane11):

And yeah I need repetition since science is not my forte haha

OpenStudy (vane11):

yeah I thought it was true so I didn't mention it

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

OK that correct due to that electronegative polarity of that molecule will change more polar the functional group in a molecule more easy for it to soluble

OpenStudy (vane11):

So both will be correct then

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

what both will be correct :)

OpenStudy (vane11):

I just wanted to make sure that molecular mass was important enough to be one of the reasons it was more soluble Thankyou

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

noooo molecular mass is nothing to do with solubality

OpenStudy (vane11):

Oh will it was wrong anyway haha maybe I should've gone with my gut instinct

OpenStudy (abb0t):

molar mass does play a small role, but it probably plays a role in larger molecules such as proteins.

OpenStudy (abb0t):

plays a bigger role*

OpenStudy (vane11):

yeah that's why I was unsure of saying it was true... thankyou!

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

ur welcome :) but she is asking for small molecules @abb0t why are you bringing proteins here

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

proteins have different chemistry itself called biochemistry :)

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

:)
