When the compound BaCl2 forms, what happens to the Ba and Cl ions?

OpenStudy (john_es):

The Ba ion lost 2 electrons. These electrons are ceded to the Cl ions. \[Ba\rightarrow Ba^{+2}+2e^{-}\]\[2(Cl\rightarrow Cl^{-}+e^{-})\] In this type of bond, the electrons are not shared.
