an Australian bush camper discovers that the kerosene used for lighting the camping stove has become mixed with the water. The kerosene must be separated from the water before it can be brought on the camping tri. a)give a scientific description of the problem. b)describe the method that could be used to achivet that. why this method would work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i need it urgently for my assignment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pls help anybody

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

do think keroscene and water are soluble when u mix them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then how do u separate them

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

u didn't answer my question

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

do think keroscene and water are soluble when u mix them ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wht

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

the above is my question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

then just using separating funel u can separate the heavier will be settled at the bottom and lighter will be above

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are wrong

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kerosene floats, it does not sink

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

i said heavier will settle bottom and lighter will be floating i didn't specified kerosene or water is heavy or light ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then how can i separate them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not cleared yet

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

u know separating funnel

OpenStudy (anonymous):

????

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

if you put the mixture of kerosene and water in a seperting funnel the two layers get separated bcoz of their immiscible and non solubility then you can separate one layer by removing the knob and collect the first layer in one beaker and second layer in another beaker

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

this is how it looks like

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okk, what about a(

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

they have different density and also different solubility since kerosene is long chain hydrocarbon and its non polar and wont easily mixed up with polar molecules like water hence forms a separate layers when me mix both togeather so that we can very easily separate them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't understand how does it answer the q' "give a scientific description og the problem"?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

this is the only science behind this different in density and different in solubality

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ookk. thank u so much for helping i really appreciate

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

ur welcome :)LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats funny

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

nothing just like that :)for appreciating:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):
