An nucleus that undergoes alpha decay emits a Helium nucleus. \[^{4} _{2} He\] 4 is the mass number (total neutrons and protons) 2 is the atomic number (total number of protons) So you would subtract a Helium nucleus from whatever is undergoing decay to find out what happens to the proton-neutron ratio.
