Hi! Can anyone tell me what the chemical equation would be for the reaction of ethanol with methyl chloride?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

can you write down the formula for both and in this -Oh group of ethanol get replace by chloride

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since both are polar, it will be hard for the reaction to proceed but again a Cl is a good leaving group so may be the reaction could be: CH3CH2OH + CH3Cl >>>> CH3CH2CH3+ HCl

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

can u tell @raane it goes through SN1 or SN2 mechanism

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@raane where does the O from OH go then?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

lol it wont form HCl but it forms CH3CH2OH + CH3Cl-----> CH3CH2Cl +CH3OH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@chmvijay how

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it possible that an methyl ethyl ether is formed along with HCL?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

noooo i don't think soo its substitution reaction :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are u sure? This is driving me nuts! @chmvijay

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

LOL not sure see this link http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130510215138AAZX2bF

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup its the same as what raane said! But again, where does the 'O' go? @chmvijay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What did you say? @chmvijay?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

i am right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

U mean its simple substitution?
