How can I tell if a molecule is polar or non-polar, assuming that I haven't memorized the electronegativity values?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

then you cant LOL:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get these questions in the examination where I have to distinguish between polar and non-polar molecules and all I have is the periodic table without the values. How can I tackle these? :(

OpenStudy (rane):

u can actually

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

ok this is the question if you go from right to left in periodic table the electronegativity increases and as you move from top to bottom in the periodic table the electronegativity decreses

OpenStudy (rane):

substances that are solute r known as polar

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

based on this you can find relative electronegativity and can tell the polarity if the electro negativity differences are more and non polar if electronegativity differences are less ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you please give me an example?

OpenStudy (rane):

polar.. water, sugar, nacl

OpenStudy (rane):

non polar.. oil nd petrol

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

LOL for example if you take Na and cl Na is at the left corner of the PT and Cl on the right corner of the PT hence NaCl has high differences in the electronegativity hence it s ionic or polar where as for Cl2 yopu take its non polar
