HELP! Which of the following substances CaCl2, FeCl2, Hg, H20, CrCl3, MgO, Na, Cu i) Conducts electricity in (s) state? ii)is used as a refractory material in furnaces?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

1) wil be Na,Cu ...These are metals

OpenStudy (aravindg):

2) I think it is CaCl2

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Hg also conducts electricity in s state

OpenStudy (xanthe):

Can CaCl2,CrCl3,MgO be under i)?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

nope

OpenStudy (xanthe):

Why?

OpenStudy (aravindg):

those are salts

OpenStudy (aravindg):

they conduct electricity only in molten state

OpenStudy (xanthe):

Ohh..Ok tysm!:D

OpenStudy (xanthe):

But isnt Hg a liquid?

thomaster (thomaster):

yes mercury is liquid at room temperature and a good conductor in liquid, solid and gas state.

thomaster (thomaster):

by the way for the second point i'd pick magnesium oxide (\(MgO\)). it has a melting point of 3125 K which is 3 times higher than the melting point of Calciumchloride(\(CaCl_2\))

OpenStudy (xanthe):

You guys r too kind. Thank you so much!:D
