What is the charge of an atom that has gained electric charge?

OpenStudy (compassionate):

Has it gained positive or negative electric charge? Ha ha!

OpenStudy (compassionate):

If the atom has more electrons then it's negative. If it has more protons then it's positive.

good question, charge was quantized by Millikan, e = 1.6 x10^-19, i think its when an atom gains a protons, its becomes a positively charged ion, and when it loses protons it becomes a negatively charged ion. however its chemistry, and my knowledge of bonds is poor, but i know ionic and covalent kind of overlap in the higher levels of chemistry, i would recommend looking into acids and bases, proton donors/acceptors, electrons seem to be mutually involved between atomic interactions and are shared.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

atoms don't lose or gain protons unless it's through fission/fusion reactions and so they would turn into another element.. electrons are what's exchanged to form ions.
